This journey has been an unbelievable experience of friendship, preparation, competition and coaching. With recent news of Ultimate Fighter 19 Edgar vs Penn it looks like the experience will continue and I am looking forward to the experience.

Being with Frankie and Team Edgar from the beginning we’ve experienced much starting with the crack cheek from underground in NYC, to his UFC breakout win over Tyson Griffen and that will-fought knee bar. That fight Frankie arrived. Then the many wins to the belt, the bonus of earning it with a dominant win over a UFC Hall of Famer BJ Penn. The trilogy with Gray Maynard, that knockout. The losses to Henderson in controversial decisions. Then the Aldo loss. Rebounding to the win column with Olivieria. And now onto the ultimate fighter 19 Team Edgar vs Team Penn. With another win over BJ Penn I am unsure where that will put Frankie as far as title contention but The Ultimate Fighter will be great exposure for Frankie and his talent for fighting and training.

In the days, weeks ahead I will be posting blogs here keeping you up to date with my preparation and our Ultimate Fighter experience. In the meantime below is my original Frankie Edgar meets Steve Rivera story and the first chapters of our relations through college and entering the UFC. Good video production. Great Story.

The Original Elite Wrestler, Frankie Edgar.

Today Elite Wrestling is a multi-site wrestling program, training 100+ per session. Its rewarding to know this business was built on a friendship between a passionate post-graduate wrestler named STEVE RIVERA and a hungry to be great young wrestler named FRANKIE EDGAR.

Elite wrestling is the Birthplace of UFC Lightweight World Champion Frankie Edgar. The journey began 20 years ago when I was coaching the Toms River Wrestling Club. Its a private club that has always produced high level wrestlers and Frankie was no different. During that time we forged a friendship-mentorship that today still ceases to amaze me.

Frankie, a 7th grader at the time was raw, aggressive and never satisfied.  Seeing that I knew he had all the tools to be a great wrestler. Coming off a National Title for Trenton State, I was was able to set the bar rather high as far as conditioning and prepartion for a standard high school kid. At the time not all could take it and it did limit those who would work with us. Looking back now its that same mentality today that separates me from the competition. Frankie’s preparation instantly made his mark and proved he would be a power to deal with. With an impressive high school career to any standard, Frankie finished his high school career with over 100 wins and two NJSIAA State Places. Not to mention countless tournament, District and Region Championships. But he wasnt satisfied.

A Scholarship athlete at Clarion University, Frankie was a EIWA Champion, four time NCAA Qualifier. At the end of his college career he stacked up enough wins to be one of the All Time Win Leaders in Clarion Wrestlings long history. Once again by any standard a stellar career. But he wasnt satisfied.

Today he is the UFC Lightweight World Champion. Still not Satisfied and still the same kid I met 16 years ago. Its amazing to witness resilence to this degree. He has struggled up the hill of success for most of his career but never turned away from the challenge and has finally arrived. To see him with the UFC belt proves that with a dream and motivation there’s a chance for greatness in anyone. Watch the videos below for more information our relationship.
